Yishun’s Chencharu getting Park, Food Centre, Bus Terminal

A colonial-era plantation house located in Bukit Sembawang will stand on top of the new park, which will be among the amenities that will be provided to the residents of an up-and-coming housing development in Yishun.

Chencharu, bounded by the Yishun Avenues 1, 2, and Sembawang Road, will also have an integrated development comprising the hawker centre and bus interchange, as well as retail outlets and residential units.

The new facilities will include a nursing home and an educational facility to accommodate the residents of all age groups.

Chencharu was originally a farm and plantation during the first half of 1900 was later transformed into a recreational and commercial area. It contained nurseries for plants and the former Bottletree Park, that later became Orto Leisure Park. The region was designated as a residential zone in the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s masterplan of 2019.

By 2040, about 10,000 houses will be constructed on the site of 70ha, at least 80 per cent of which will be public flats.

HDB has announced that its first Build-to-Order project in Chencharu will go live prior to the end of June. It will comprise 1,270 units that include flexi-flats and flexi-flats having two rooms, as well as three-, four-, and five-room apartments. It will progressively launch the other projects over the next few years.

Its plans for the area will pay homage to Chencharu’s history and heritage as well as incorporating innovative and sustainable features in the development.

The very first BTO Project in Chencharu has elements from the bungalow that is more than 100 years old at 50 Bah Soon Pah Road. The authorities have preserved the two-story bungalow constructed by Bukit Sembawang Rubber Company in the early 1900s.

Inspiring itself from the bungalow’s architecture, with its floors raised above the ground by columns and masonry piers and columns, the BTO project will feature an outline of black on the first few storeys and an all-black, red and white façade that reflects the hues of the home.

The park will be constructed around the bungalow, which will be renovated to be used for community purposes.

The park will be situated near the BTO Project and include playgrounds, fitness areas that include fitness equipment, hard courts and open lawns for sports and an area for therapeutic use.

It will also include an historic trail that includes a series of gardens and storyboards for residents to learn about the area’s history.

These features are intended to promote social interaction as well as a vigorous lifestyle and overall wellbeing of residents.

The high demand for the previous BTO launches in Yishun is expected to persist for the first BTO in Chencharu.

Over three BTO projects in Yishun that were inaugurated in November 2022 There were more than 1,400 applicants competing for 917 four-room flats. Then there were an additional 1,400 people applied for 795 five-room units.
